Researchers have developed a type of porous concrete that can essentially clean itself. The team added oil, an emulsifier and hydrophobic silicone polymer to wet concrete, and then dried and heated the concrete to evaporate the oil to leave behind polymer-coated pores. If the building industry embraces this material, it could lead to a wide range of different structures that require a lot less maintenance.
